MANUSCRIPT PROBLEM

Why does my protagonist feel passive?

A protagonist can be busy on every page and still feel passive if events happen around them without their choices shaping what follows. Activity and agency are not quite the same thing.

BEFORE YOU CHANGE ANYTHING

We would not insist that the protagonist must always take charge or make bold decisions. A character can be trapped, hesitant, or outmatched and still exercise agency within those limits.

FIVE QUESTIONS

What we would look for first

01

What does the protagonist choose, even when options are limited?

Start here, then go back to the page and see what the manuscript gives you.
02

Do their decisions affect what happens next?

Start here, then go back to the page and see what the manuscript gives you.
03

Are they responding to events in ways that reveal priorities?

Start here, then go back to the page and see what the manuscript gives you.
04

Does the story show the cost of waiting or refusing to act?

Start here, then go back to the page and see what the manuscript gives you.
05

Are other characters consistently making the consequential choices instead?

Start here, then go back to the page and see what the manuscript gives you.
WHERE A DEEPER READ HELPS

Stay with the reaction before deciding what to change.

We would trace the relationship between the protagonist’s decisions and the story’s turning points. The question is not whether they do enough, but whether their choices matter to the shape of events.

A POSSIBLE NEXT STEP

Bring the question, not a diagnosis.

You do not need to arrive knowing which editorial service you need. If you want another pair of eyes on the actual manuscript, this is the route that fits the question above.

IF YOU ARE STILL NOT SURE

That is useful information too.

Sometimes the most honest starting point is simply, “Something isn't working and I cannot quite tell why.” You can start there.
